Sheffield’s early tram routes often had several different termini over the years. Lines were extended, and occasionally a terminus short of the end of the route was used for some services - which is the case here as the tram waits on Batley Street ready to join Barnsley Road. The ‘E’ at the front denotes an Ecclesall service. The road itself has changed as we would expect, but it not only has a new name now; Crabtree Close, which dates from the 1960s - but it also had a previous name too; Brook Lane, which it was called prior to 1886. I don’t know if it is the only Sheffield street to have had three completely different names - but I haven’t heard of another. As for the tram (don’t both it and the staff look great!), it has helped date the photo to 1902 according to a discussion on the Sheffield History website (the Picture Sheffield archive estimate is 1912). Just about the only common denominator in both photos is the corner house on the right - which at one time overlooked its owner’s very convenient tram service.

Thanks for this tram snippet. Elderly relatives of mine lived on Crabtree Lane. I remember there was great consternation when Batley Street's name was changed to the more 'upmarket' sounding Crabtree Close. That it had previously been Brook Lane is interesting. A road with an identity crisis?
